The caveat is that there is no standard formula. Different broadcasters and publications use different models, weightings and assumptions, and two impact ratings for the same innings can disagree substantially. Use them, but always check the definition, and never treat a proprietary rating as an objective fact.

Five ways scorecards mislead

  1. Tiny samples. A career built on nine innings is a rumour, not a record.
